Current Read: A Game of Thrones

Unless you have been living under a rock, you will have heard of Game of Thrones. If not the book, at least the TV show. Since I recently finished taking the CPA exam, I finally have some free time, so I decided to start reading it. I watched most of Season 1 of the show, and the show follows the books fairly closely (for Season 1), so I knew most of what was going to happen.

Full disclosure: Spoilers ahead.

What I find most difficult to stomach about the series is the lack of happy ending, which sounds dumb but true. In Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, yes, people die, but most of the “good” people do not. Or at least they stick around long enough for us to enjoy their presence for enough of the series (e.g., Dumbledore, Boromir). You can remain hopeful. It remains difficult for me to get over Eddard’s death. People just die so easily in this series. Still sad about Robb, Catelyn, even Shae. Not sad about Joffrey.

What really keeps me hooked are the impactful scenes that stay with me. I watched Season 1 a few years ago (when it first came out), and I still remember the scene where Daenerys emerges from the funeral pyre with her dragons. There are so many scenes that are so impactful and stay with you. To me, that’s what makes a good book.
